General Science : Heavy Water

Deuterium Oxide (or) Heavy Water Heavy Water (D2O) is used as a moderator and coolant in the Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). There often a misconception that since it is used in nuclear reactors, it is radioactive. No radioactivity is associated with it. Deuterium, also called Heavy Hydrogen is a stable isotope of Hydrogen with a natural abundance of approximately one atom in about 7000 of Hydrogen ( about 150 ppm). Heavy Water (D2 O) is a compound of Deuterium and Oxygen. It has a great similarity in its physical and chemical properties to ordinary water but its nuclear properties display a significant variation, which makes it an extremely efficient material for use as moderator & coolant in a nuclear reactor. Heavy Water is non-radioactive. Moderator is a substance required in a Nuclear Reactor to slow down the Neutrons produced in the fission reaction in order to sustain the chain reaction. In India it is used in Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors. ...

Notes on Indian Financial Sector (Economy) What is KYC ?

NOTES ON INDIAN FINANCIAL SECTOR ( ECONOMY)  Q1. What is RTGS System? Ans. The acronym 'RTGS' stands for Real Time Gross Settlement, which can be defined as the continuous (real-time) settlement of funds transfers individually on an order by order basis (without netting). 'Real Time' means the processing of instructions at the time they are received rather than at some later time.'Gross Settlement' means the settlement of funds transfer instructions occurs individually (on an instruction by instruction basis). Considering that the funds settlement takes place in the books of the Reserve Bank of India, the payments are final and irrevocable.  Q2. How RTGS is different from National Electronics Funds Transfer System (NEFT)? Ans. NEFT is an electronic fund transfer system that operates on a Deferred Net Settlement (DNS) basis which settles transactions in batches. In DNS, the settlement takes place with all transactions received till the particular cut-off time....

UNFCCC

UNFCCC/KYOTO PROTOCOLS COMMENTS/ARGUMENTS BEFORE DURBAN MEETING IN NOVEMBER, 2011 As delegates gather in South Africa to plot the next big push against climate change, Western governments are saying it’s time to move beyond traditional distinctions between industrial and developing countries and get China and other growing economies to accept legally binding curbs on greenhouse gases. More than 100 countries representatives are attending the meeting . The immediate focus is the Kyoto Protocol, the 1997 agreement requiring 37 industrialized countries to slash carbon emissions to 5 percent below 1990 levels by 2012. Each country has a binding target and faces penalties for falling short. The U.S., then and now the world’s largest polluter per capita, refused to join Kyoto because it imposed no obligations on countries like China, which has since surpassed the U.S. in overall emissions. Now, with the Kyoto pact’s expiry date looming, poor countries want the signatories to accept further r...

Climte Change Process

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CLIMATE CHANGE PROCESS AND THE CDM THE UNFCCC: - Climate change poses a serious threat to sustainable development, with adverse impacts expected on human health, food security, economic activity, the environment, water and other natural resources, as well as physical infrastructure. The international political response to climate change took shape in 1992 with the adoption of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The UNFCCC sets out a framework for action aimed at stabilizing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHG) in order to avoid “dangerous anthropogenic (i.e., human beings activities related) interference” with the climate system. Controlled gases include methane, nitrous oxide and, in particular, carbon dioxide. The UNFCCC entered into force in March 1994, and now has 189 parties. Kyoto Protocol: - In December 1997, delegates met in Kyoto, Japan, and adopted the Kyoto Protocol to the UNFCCC that commits developed countries a...

Periodic Table : New Elements

PROBABLE QUESTIONS ON NEW ELEMENTS IN THE PERIODIC TABLE 1)Whichthree (3) new elements are discovered recently and added to the Periodic Table in Chemistry? Ans: Darmstadtium (Ds),Roentgenium (Rg) and Copernicium (Cn). 2) What are the general nature of these new three elements? Ans: The elements are so large and unstable they can only be made in the lab and quickly break down into other elements. They fall in the type of ‘Transition Metals’. 3)Who discovered Darmstadtium ? Ans: by Peter Armbruster and Gottfried Münzenberg, under the direction of professor Sigurd Hofmann. It is originally called as "ununnilium" (one-one-zero for 110), 4) Who discovered Roentgenium ? Ans: It is originally called as "unununium" (one-one-one for 111) (in Latin language) 4) Who discovered Copernicium ? Ans : A team led by Sigurd Hofman . It is originally called as "ununbium" (one-one-two for 112). 5) These three elements are called as ? Ans : They are known as Super-heavy...
